In a significant move that has sent waves of excitement through the Ottawa soccer community, Atlético Ottawa proudly announced the return of Matteo de Brienne. The highly sought-after 21-year-old talent, who earned the prestigious title of the 2023 Canadian Premier League under-21 ‘Player of the Year,’ has inked a one-year deal with an option to extend through 2025.

From Barrhaven to the National Stage

Hailing from Barrhaven, Ottawa, Matteo de Brienne is more than an exciting young Canadian talent; he’s a hometown player with a journey that resonates with the heart of the community. Educated at École secondaire catholique Pierre-Savard, De Brienne honed his skills at Ottawa South United (OSU) before venturing to British Columbia. There, he continued his studies while training within the prestigious Vancouver Whitecaps Residency Program, showcasing his commitment to both academics and the Beautiful Game.

At the age of 18, De Brienne marked a significant milestone by signing his first professional contract, becoming part of Atlético Ottawa’s inaugural roster during the modified 2020 CPL season (The Island Games). Despite not picking up any game time, De Brienne picked up invaluable experience which he took as his journey continued to Carleton University, contributing ten appearances and scoring six goals, aiding in securing the silver medal at the U SPORTS National Finals for the Ravens.

Having been named OUA West Divison Rooke of the Year, De Brienne backed himself and his qualities by opting out of the 2022 CPL – U SPORTS Draft and putting pen to paper with Valour FC in the CPL. In two seasons with the Winnipeg-based team, De Brienne featured 44 times picking up six goals and three assists from the left-back position.

Excellence in 2023: A Star born with Valour FC

The 2023 season proved to be a breakout year for De Brienne with Valour FC. In just 20 appearances, the 21-year-old displayed versatility, excelling at left-back and seamlessly transitioning into a more attacking role towards the season’s end. His statistics spoke volumes – three goals, three assists, 24 chances created, and an impressive 40 interceptions, cementing himself as one of Valour’s top performers and amongst the best young players in the league.

Carlos González, Head Coach of Atlético Ottawa, expressed his enthusiasm for the acquisition, highlighting De Brienne’s competitive mentality, talent, and proven experience. The coach emphasized the importance of attracting local talents and nurturing their professional development, a sentiment echoed by CEO Fernando López.

He continued, expressing his gratitude for the chance to continue growing as both a person and a player in Ottawa, describing the move as the “right place” for him to take the next step in his career.
