The Canadian Premier League announced on Thursday the nominees for this year’s Golden Glove award, honouring the best goalkeeper during the 2022 regular season, with Atlético Ottawa’s own Nathan Ingham featuring amongst the three finalists.
Cavalry FC’s Marco Carducci, Atlético Ottawa’s Nathan Ingham and Pacific FC’s Callum Irving were nominated for the award by members of the league office. The award will be voted on by select media members, with the winner revealed at an in-person ceremony during the league’s 2022 Finals Weekend.
Ingham, 29, is no stranger to the CPL after spending the league’s first three seasons backstopping for his hometown club, York United. His move to Atlético Ottawa, made official in January, proved successful as Ingham helped the squad to its first playoff appearance and regular season title. Ingham finished tied for first with 63 saves over the regular season and eight clean sheets along the way. He was included in the CPL’s Gatorade Team of the Week three times over the regular season, a crucial part of the defensive backbone that earned Ottawa its spot at the top of the standings.
Carducci, 26, continued to be a mainstay in Cavalry’s lineup in 2022, his fourth season with the club. He missed the first three games of Cavalry’s season after a diagnosis of testicular cancer but made a strong return in the club’s fourth match of the year, making four saves, three clearances and preserving a clean sheet in a 2-0 win over defending champion Pacific. The native of Calgary, and 2019 Golden Glove winner, would go on to post 10 shutouts in 24 appearances for Cavalry this year. He was named the CPL’s Player of the Week following his return to the field in Week 4 and earned four nods to the CPL’s Gatorade Team of the Week over the course of the regular season.
Irving, 29, proved once again that he is key to Pacific’s success with his performances in 2022. The native of Vancouver, in his third year with the club, tied Ingham with a league-leading 63 saves over the regular season. Irving was also heavily involved in his team’s ability to work the ball out from the back, making 101 more total passes than any other goalkeeper in the CPL. He matched Carducci for most appearances by a goalkeeper in the CPL’s Gatorade Team of the Week with four, and earned a Player of the Week nod in Week 5 following a 10-save shutout appearance against eventual regular season champion Ottawa.
Voting for all the CPL’s annual awards will this year be based on performances during the regular season, not including Canadian Championship, Concacaf or playoff action.
The winner of the Golden Glove award will be awarded a unique piece of Inuit soapstone art, conceived by artist Kellipalik Etidloie. The Canadian Inuit Dog statue is awarded annually to the CPL goalkeeper voted best at his position because the Canadian Inuit Dog and goalkeepers are, similarly, protectors who play vital roles in guarding their communities.
The in-person CPL awards ceremony will be held ahead of the league’s playoff championship match, to be played either Saturday, Oct. 29 or Sunday, Oct. 30 depending on the host city. The highest-seeded team to reach the playoff final will earn the right to host the championship match.
