Coupland’s First (of many)

They say you never forget your first. Antoine Coupland came into Sunday’s match after his teammates already had manufactured a 1-0 lead over western heavyweights Cavalry FC.

It’s obvious why he was subbed on. To say Coupland has energy is an understatement. Put pressure on the ball and see the game out was most likely the pep talk. Little did he know that minutes later, he would tally his first professional goal.

Having a terrific opportunity with one of his first touches, Antoine came very close to scoring, but was unable to put the ball between Cavalry FC’s Carducci legs… but another opportunity was coming. Full credit to Viti Martinez for making the extra pass in which young Antoine, after giving himself a decent first touch, finished with the composure normally set aside for strikers more advanced in age. He scored. It was in added time and was one of the last kicks of the match.

Soccer is all about moments.

This is one that will no doubt stay with the 17 year-old homegrown player forever. And not just him. Don’t forget about Coupland’s family. Consider all the time and effort that goes into raising an elite athlete. The travel. The away trips. The overnights in hotels. The long car rides. The early mornings. Supporting in rain or shine. Antoine, you have made them proud. You have made your club and your city proud. Supporters are surely writing the chants now. Can’t wait to see you all at TD Place in August.
