Club Captain Carl Haworth Announces Upcoming Retirement from Professional Soccer

Atlético Ottawa club captain and local soccer legend, Carl Haworth, has announced his retirement from professional soccer at the end of the 2023 Canadian Premier League (CPL) season.

In a heartfelt statement, Haworth shared, “This is a decision that has come about over time, dealing with an injury that isn’t able to get better. I’ve been managing it, but over time it’s become challenging, physically and mentally. Going into the season, I thought this might be my last one, and making this announcement felt like the right thing to do as we head into our final home match of the regular season, and to get to share this moment with the soccer community in the city.”

Haworth, who joined Atlético Ottawa ahead of the 2022 season, has played 41 matches for the Rojiblancos, making significant contributions with three goals and nine assists. He also had the honour of starting in last year’s CPL final. His exceptional leadership qualities led to his official appointment as club captain by Head Coach Carlos González at the beginning of the current campaign.

A hometown hero, Haworth grew up in Barrie, Ontario, after his family immigrated from England when he was just a toddler. He began his professional journey with Ottawa Fury FC in 2013 and continued to shine in the NASL and USL before finding his home with Atlético Ottawa.

Over his six seasons in Ottawa, Haworth established numerous club records, including most appearances (169), goals scored (27), and assists (29) across all competitions. In his final season with Ottawa Fury FC in 2019, he showcased his versatility by tallying 10 goals and nine assists in 33 league appearances, earning him the coveted Player of the Year award.

Beyond his contributions on the field, Haworth has been deeply involved with the local soccer community, working with the Gloucester Hornets youth soccer club. Reflecting on his connection to Ottawa, he said, “As soon as I got to the city, I knew it was a place I could call home.”

Atlético Ottawa’s CEO, Fernando López, commended Haworth’s outstanding contributions, saying, “Carl has been a true leader on and off the field, embodying the values and spirit of our organization. His dedication and passion for the game have left an indelible mark on our club, our fans, and the Canadian soccer community.”

To celebrate Haworth’s illustrious career, Atlético Ottawa will honour the club’s captain pre-match this Sunday at TD Place.
