Atlético Ottawa has completed the signing of 23-year-old forward Rubén del Campo on a free transfer until the end of the 2024 Canadian Premier League season.
Rubén de Campo brings a wealth of talent, experience, and potential to the team, making him an exciting addition to the Ottawa lineup. The 23-year-old’s journey began in the renowned youth academy of Atlético de Madrid, where he developed his skills under the guidance of our Head Coach Carlos González. Their previous collaboration provides a strong foundation for del Campo’s integration into the team, setting the stage for what we hope will be a successful reunion on the field.
“Having worked closely with Rubén in the past, I am delighted to have him join our team,” expressed Carlos González, Head Coach of Atlético Ottawa. “His speed, goal-scoring instincts, and selfless work ethic make him a valuable asset. Rubén’s inclusion will offer us a different dimension in the final third, and I am confident he will make a significant contribution to our success.”
In his most recent stint, Rubén del Campo showcased his abilities in the Spanish third division while representing San Fernando CD. With four goals and two assists in the first 11 games of the season, del Campo proved himself as a dynamic left-footed attacker, known for his speed, relentless determination, and clinical finishing. His addition adds variety and an edge to our offensive.
Excited about the next chapter of his career, Rubén shared his thoughts on joining the team, saying, “I am excited to start this new chapter of my career and immerse myself in the world of professional soccer in North America. This opportunity presents a significant milestone in my journey, allowing me to grow personally and professionally. Reuniting with Carlos González as my coach fills me with fond memories of my time at the academy. Under his guidance, I gained invaluable lessons and developed so much as a player. Getting the chance to work under him again allows me to further nurture my potential and elevate my game to new heights.”
Rubén del Campo’s professional career has taken him to various leagues, including Portugal’s top division with FC Famalicão and Spain’s second division with UD Melilla, where he demonstrated his goal-scoring prowess with 10 goals in 22 starts. Holding dual nationality, Rubén has already represented Switzerland U20s but also has the opportunity to represent Spain.
The CEO of Atlético Ottawa, Fernando López, expressed his delight about the signing, stating, “We are delighted to welcome Rubén del Campo, another talented product of Atlético de Madrid’s youth academy, to our club. Rubén perfectly aligns with our tactical vision and adds depth to our attacking options. With his skill set and prior experience playing with members of our current first team, we believe Rubén will thrive in front of a electric crowd at TD Place.”
