Match Lookahead: Road clash with FC Edmonton

Back on the road, Atlético Ottawa head to Alberta as they face FC Edmonton on Sunday in game 11 of the 2022 Canadian Premier League season (KO 5 PM ET, live on OneSoccer). On a historic run of five unbeaten games, Atleti will be hunting for three points to maintain pace at the top of the CPL leader board, before travelling to Halifax and Hamilton over the next few weeks.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Sunday’s kick-off:

  • Atlético Ottawa are currently tied for second place with Pacific FC (Victoria, BC), two points adrift of league leaders Cavalry FC (Calgary, AB).
  • This is Ottawa’s second, and final trip to Edmonton for the 2022 season, before hosting Edmonton twice at TD Place later in this summer.
    • The first game was a tight affair (as most of the games between these two sides tend to be) as Head Coach Carlos González tried out a new system and roasted his squad.
    • Atleti won the game 2-1 courtesy of goals by Brian Wright and Ollie Bassett (penalty).
  • Despite a turbulent off-season, FC Edmonton continue to grow and progress under the guidance of Alan Koch.
    • In their last three games (1D-2L), the Eddies have pushed their opponents all the way. Forge FC needed a stunning Tristan Borges hat-trick, HFX Wanderers needed Sam Salter’s brace and Valour FC required a 94th-minute equalizer to ensure their respective teams got something out of their clashes with Edmonton.
    • Ottawa native, and former Carleton Raven star Gabriel Bitar has gone from strength to strength this season as he continues to impress having recently taken the step up to the CPL.
  • Last time out, Ottawa were held to a goalless draw by York United, with goalkeeper Nathan Ingham pulling off two match-saving stops, earning him a place in the Team of the Week.
  • Record head-to-head (all-time): 3W-2D-0L; 10 goals scored, 7 goals conceded

Quotes

Carlos González, Atlético Ottawa Head Coach

“We have not much time to prepare for this game, but the team is working very hard and really well, so we have good motivation to go to Edmonton and get three points. We have to improve some small details from the last game, continue with our ambition and the work that we have been doing – there is no other path to the victory.”
