Match Preview: TELUS Canadian Championship May 1

Atlético Ottawa begins its journey to lifting the Voyageurs Cup on Wednesday (KO 7 pm ET, live one OneSoccer) as Winnipeg’s Valour FC travels to the capital in the Preliminary Round of the TELUS Canadian Championship. This single-leg knock-out match will see both Canadian Premier League (CPL) sides put league form to the side as Ottawa seeks to remain unbeaten in all competitions in 2024.

Here’s everything you need to know before Wednesday’s Canadian Championship clash in Ottawa.

Atlético Ottawa is unbeaten at the start of the 2024 CPL season (2-1-0). Ottawa returns from a clash in Nova Scotia last weekend, besting Halifax Wanderers in their Home Opener.  Midfielder Manny Aparicio scored his second campaign goal, while Ballou Tabla (first goal since his return to the club) and Rubén del Campo (first goal for the club) also found the back of the net. Local stars Matteo de Brienne and Kris Twardek produced assists, as well as exciting u21 talent Gabriel Antinoro. This was the debut of The “Soccer Culture” Kit, created in collaboration with Ottawa Tourism and celebrating people of influence within the Ottawa soccer community.

This is the first round of the 2024 TELUS Canadian Championship, with the domestic cup competition beginning last week as Toronto FC (Major League Soccer) and Cavalry FC (CPL) advancing to the quarter-finals. Atlético faces Valour in a re-match of the 2021 preliminary round, which ended in a 3-2 win for the side from Winnipeg. That was Ottawa’s first appearance in the competition. Last year, Atlético progressed to the quarter-finals before losing in a penalty shoot-out at Forge FC.

Valour has proven to be a challenging foe for Atlético over the last few years. Ottawa lost only once to Valour in 2023; however, the late-season defeat was costly, as they missed the playoffs. Ollie Bassett is the highest active scorer in this match-up (four goals). Valour continues a long road trip away from Winnipeg (MB) at the start of this season as work continues on the Princess Auto Stadium (0-0-3).

Record head-to-head (all-time): 4W-3D-6L; 14 goals scored, 21 goals conceded.
