Gatorade Team of the Week 2024 – Week 3

Goalkeeper

Chris Kalongo (Forge FC)

Kalongo’s fantastic start to the season continued on Saturday against Valour, as he bailed his backline out on a few occasions — making six saves. His most impressive came on a close-range effort from Jordan Swibel that he somehow parried over the net.

Defenders

Juan Córdova (York United)

In his debut for York United, the Canadian international fullback was outstanding. Combining brilliantly with Max Ferrari down the right flank, Córdova set up the Nine Stripes’ opening goal on Friday against Vancouver FC. He also attempted 19 passes in the final third, and made three interceptions.

Frank Sturing (York United)

Another Nine Stripes debutant on Friday, and another Canadian international, defender Frank Sturing hardly put a foot wrong against one of the most dangerous attacking teams so far this season in the CPL. Sturing won possession seven times, made three interceptions, and showed a passing range that is going to be a significant asset for York this season.

Daniel Parra (Forge FC)

Parra has adapted to the Forge FC system with stunning ease and is already proving to be an essential piece on both sides of the ball. He assisted on Borges’ opener with a brilliant run, made 20 passes in the final third and won possession nine times against Valour on Saturday.

Midfielders

Ballou Tabla (Atlético Ottawa)

Tabla scored his first of the season for Ottawa during an outstanding performance, consistently getting in behind the Halifax line. It could have easily been more, as he had seven shot attempts, three of which were on target. He remains one of the most dynamic and exciting players in the league.

Cédric Toussaint (Pacific FC)

The 23-year-old Toussaint bossed the midfield on Sunday against Cavalry. He won six of ten duels, won five tackles and completed a tidy 87.5 per cent of his passes over an impressive 90 composed minutes.

Manny Aparicio (Atlético Ottawa)

Aparicio scored his second goal of this season on a lovely volley, which stood as the match-winner on Saturday for Atlético Ottawa in Halifax. He also won possession seven times during another active shift in the centre of the park.

Themi Antonoglou (Valour FC)

In his first season with Valour FC, Themi Antonoglou is already proving to be one of the best crossers of the ball in the Canadian Premier League. He picked up his second assist of the campaign after setting up Jordan Faria’s goal against Forge on Saturday, and created four chances on seven crosses.

Forwards

Ollie Bassett (Atlético Ottawa)

Bassett had his best game of the season thus far against Halifax on Saturday as he was able to find more central positions and was fantastic in possession. He created four chances and completed 52 of his 54 attempted passes — 17 of which were played in the final third.

Tristan Borges (Forge FC)

It is a third straight inclusion to start the season in the Gatorade Team of the Week for Tristan Borges, who opened the scoring against Valour on Saturday. He now has five goal contributions on the season — the most any player has managed in league history after three matchweeks.

Brian Wright (York United)

Wright had his best game in a York United shirt on Friday as he scored twice, and picked up an assist, in a 3-0 victory over Vancouver FC. His third goal, in particular, was a thing of beauty as he put the match to bed by showing outstanding composure to round Callum Irving, and then outwait Rocco Romeo.
