Soccer Culture Builders: Thank you, Shaw Family

The Shaw Family, Darrell and Zenovia, have been a crucial part of Atlético Ottawa’s young history. Parents of former striker Malcolm Shaw, who returned for the first time since his departure in the off-season, were recognized pre-match for their passion and commitment to supporting soccer in Ottawa for the last four years.

Atlético Ottawa’s alternate jersey was created in collaboration with Ottawa Tourism and is being used throughout the year as a symbol to celebrate community leaders and organizations that continue to mould Ottawa’s soccer culture.

Malcolm Shaw joined Ottawa ahead of the 2020 Canadian Premier League (CPL) Island Games – the abridged version of the competition that was interrupted by the pandemic, which was incidentally Atlético’s inaugural season. When Shaw left the club in the off-season, the 28-year-old became the final player from that first roster to leave to club.

With 83 appearances, 19 goals and 5 assists Shaw was an exciting player to follow on the pitch as he was named ‘Player of the Year’ by the Atlético faithful in 2021 and scored the ‘Goal of the Tournament’ in the Island Games the year before.

Shaw’s parents, Darrell and Zenovia, would regularly make the 8+ hour round trip from Southern Ontario to support the striker during his time at TD Place as they embed themselves into the Supporters Section (The Dub). Darrell and Zenovia could often be found speaking to Ottawa’s supporters, inspiring them to keep up the electric atmosphere that is now so synonymous with the match days in the capital.

Darrell in particular never shied away from the culture, taking his turn (more than once) on the drums during away trips to York Lions Stadium. As Shaw returned to Ottawa last weekend with his new team, Cavalry FC, so did Darrell and Zenovia…
