Canadian Premier League

The Gatorade Team of the Week for the twentieth week of Canadian Premier League action in 2024, brought to you by OneSoccer’s Oliver Platt.

CPL TOTW — Week 20

Goalkeeper

Emil Gazdov (Pacific FC)

Gazdov was spectacular against Cavalry FC on Saturday afternoon, making seven saves, including stunning stops on an Ali Musse free kick and a Daan Klomp header from point blank.

Defenders

Dante Campbell (Valour FC)

Playing as a fullback on Sunday, Campbell delivered a dominant performance against Vancouver FC. The 25-year-old won a stunning 13 of 16 duels, including all six in the air, while making three tackles and a pair of interceptions.

Dan Nimick (Halifax Wanderers)

Nimick rescued what could be an important point for the Wanderers at home on Saturday with the final kick of the match — a goal from the penalty spot. It was his seventh spot kick converted of the season, which is a new single-season CPL record and he now has eight goals overall. Nimick was otherwise outstanding, winning 10 of 13 duels.

Daan Klomp (Cavalry FC)

The Cavalry central defender earned his side three points with a stoppage-time winner on Saturday against Pacific. He did an excellent job of getting himself into the box throughout the match, with four shot attempts, while also winning seven of 10 duels and possession seven times.

Bradley Kamdem (Cavalry FC)

Kamdem put in a tidy shift down the left flank for Cavalry, consistently getting forward and providing good service to the attackers. He created two chances, played six crosses, while being nearly perfect defensively winning all four of his duels contested.

Midfielders

Diego Gutiérrez (Cavalry FC)

Gutiérrez was the engine in Cavalry’s midfield on Saturday, completing 63 of 69 passes, including 30 in the final third. He also created two chances, and won possession back seven times.

Alessandro Hojabrpour (Forge FC)

Hojabrpour has made himself a fixture in the Team of the Week midfield of late, and for good reason. He again quietly bossed the midfield at York Lions Stadium on Friday, winning six of his eight duels and completing 43 of his 52 attempted passes.

Juan Córdova (York United)

The York midfielder was the most active player on the park during Friday’s clash with Forge. He created five chances during the match, while winning possession seven times including twice in the final third, and three fouls.

Ayman Sellouf (Vancouver FC)

Sellouf delivered one of the most important moments of Vancouver FC’s season so far, coming off the bench to score a stoppage-time winner for the ten-man Eagles agianst Valour on Sunday. In doing so, he showed his outstanding game-breaking ability, which will be a crucial addition to his new club.

Forwards

Samuel Salter (Atlético Ottawa)

The Atlético Ottawa super sub struck again with a big late goal against his former side, the Halifax Wanderers, on Saturday. After being played through by Rubén del Campo, Salter showed tremendous composure to create a shooting lane for himself, and send a deflected strike past Yann Fillion.

Gabriel Bitar (Vancouver FC)

Bitar opened the scoring for the Eagles on Sunday in Winnipeg — a reward for an outstanding performance against Valour. The attacker had seven touches in the box, created a chance, two dribbles and won possession twice in the final third — a key catalyst in the Vancouver FC attack.
