CPL TOTW — Week 20

Goalkeeper

Yann Fillion (Halifax Wanderers)

Fillion made three saves to keep his sixth clean sheet of the season in a 3-0 victory over Valour FC on Saturday. He capped off an excellent month where he allowed just three goals in four matches.

Defenders

Eryk Kobza (Cavalry FC)

Kobza’s ball over the top to Maël Henry resulted in the decisive penalty on Sunday for Cavalry. The defender also won possession nine times, and completed 61 of 70 passes during a Man of the Match performance.

Daniel Nimick (Halifax Wanderers)

Nimick makes a third straight appearance in the Team of the Week after his Halifax side kept another clean sheet on Saturday against Valour. This time he went one better, scoring the opener to cap off an outstanding performance that also saw him make five clearances defensively.

Daan Klomp (Cavalry FC)

Klomp’s efforts were critical in Cavalry holding on to their lead late against Pacific FC on Sunday. The central defender made four clearances, won two tackles and two of three aerial duels to keep the Tridents at bay.

Miguel Acosta (Atlético Ottawa)

Acosta put in an absolute shift for Ottawa in the backline against Forge. He was a key ball progressor for his side, with a match-leading 88 touches and three successful dribbles. Defensively, however, he was truly dominant winning 9 of 13 duels, and making four tackles and four interceptions.

Midfielders

Alex Achinioti-Jönsson (Forge FC)

Achinioti-Jönsson set the tempo throughout the match for Forge on Saturday evening, completing 60 of 65 attempted passes. He also won two tackles and made two interceptions during a tidy performance at TD Place stadium.

Mohamed Omar (Halifax Wanderers)

Omar has quietly been an incredibly steady performer for Halifax in the midfield this season. The 24-year-old barely put a foot wrong, completing 36 of 37 passes on Saturday, while winning 12 of 18 duels and making two tackles.

Jérémy Gagnon-Laparé (York United)

Gagnon-Laparé was everywhere in the midfield on Friday. He created six chances, completed two dribbles, and won possession back seven times, including twice in the final third.

Forwards

Austin Ricci (York United)

Ricci made a massive impact off the bench on Friday night, scoring one of the most important goals of York United’s season to date as his thunderous volley secured them a 2-1 victory over Vancouver FC at York Lions Stadium.

Gabriel Bitar (Vancouver FC)

Bitar makes his second straight appearance in the CPL’s Team of the Week as he kept his scoring run alive, the time with a goal just 10 minutes into his side’s match against York on Friday. Bitar was a threat throughout, managing three shots, four chances created and winning possession 11 times.

João Morelli (Halifax Wanderers)

Morelli’s introduction on Saturday in the 66th minute was crucial to securing three points for Halifax. He scored just eight minutes later, and then played a beautiful ball to Tomas Giraldo for the Wanderers’ third goal in another dominant performance.
