Malcolm Shaw earns first international call-up for Trinidad and Tobago friendlies in June

Atlético Ottawa forward Malcolm Shaw has been selected as part of the preliminary Trinidad and Tobago squad ahead of the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Shaw has established himself as one of the most well-known names since joining Atlético Ottawa in 2020 and the 27-year-old revealed that joining the club played a big part in opening the door for this opportunity.

“It’s been about two years [since 2021] now,” Shaw said. “It’s something I really wanted to do, to get eyes on me and I think over the course of the last couple of seasons, since joining Atlético I’ve been able to do that. I’m really happy that it’s been noticed and I’m being rewarded.”

Atlético’s all-time top scorer had a break-out season in 2021, scoring 10 goals and providing one assist during a turbulent campaign for the Rojiblancos. Shaw was deployed in various opposition across the pitch but always looked sharp when in front of goal.

Shaw, who qualifies to play for Trinidad and Tobago through his mother, went on to say: “It’s a big step and a new step in my career, getting the opportunity to play internationally. I’m ready to show myself and really prove myself at this new level.

“My parents are really happy, and my Mum is ecstatic – it’s her country after all! The whole family is really happy for me and I’m fortunate to have that kind of support.”

Ottawa’s number 19 will meet up with Angus Eve and the rest of the Trinidad and Tobago squad ahead of their friendlies later this month as they seek to qualify for the Gold Cup and with a personal challenge of “being involved long term” for Shaw.
