Atlético Ottawa stands against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia

Today is the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia and Atlético Ottawa has reaffirmed our commitment to stand against discrimination in all forms whilst promoting inclusivity and diversity within the growing soccer landscape in Ottawa.

Atlético Ottawa and the Canadian Premier League (CPL) have a long-standing history of supporting the 2SLGBTQIA+ community across Canada, with league partners Volkswagen putting their money and time into making sure a message of inclusivity is heard loud and proud across the pitch.

In 2023 Atlético’s front office staff deepened their commitment to the Pride community, completing an Inclusivity Certification presented by You Can Play demonstrating an “unwavering commitment to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment within” the club.

“The International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia brings together LGBTQ+ individuals, allies, activists, organizations, and communities from around the world in a spirit of solidarity and support,” said Capital Pride Co-Chair, Sean Addis. “It creates opportunities for dialogue, collaboration, and collective action to address the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals and advance social justice.”

“Your dedication to promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion in sports is truly commendable, and it sets an inspiring example for other sports organizations to follow,” said Heidi Johnston, a Sports Partnerships Manager at You Can Play. “By becoming You Can Play Inclusivity certified, Atlético Ottawa has taken a significant step toward creating a safe and supportive space for athletes and fans alike, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.”

This year, Atlético sought to empower the local Pride community, collaborating with Capital Priude and MAX Ottawa to help bring the 2024 “Soccer For Everyone” match day experience to a whole new level. The decision was taken to move the match to June (as opposed to Capital Pride Month in August) to facilitate participation in the match, but also allow Atlético to be further involved in Capital Pride’s summer curriculum.

A fundraising initiative has been created to support Capital Pride and MAX Ottawa’s programming, as well as a generous financial and ticket donation from Matchday Presenting Partner Volkswagen which will support Capital Rainbow Refuge.

“In the face of current rhetoric, attitudes and rules excluding queer and trans people from sports, the 2024 Pride Game is a beacon to the 2SLGBTQIA+ community that we can feel safe and welcome participating in sports,” said Brenna Egan of MAX Ottawa.
