Atlético Ottawa duo Malcolm Shaw, Luke Singh make international debuts as Trinidad and Tobago win Gold Cup Opener

Atlético Ottawa striker Malcolm Shaw and defender Luke Singh made their international debuts this past weekend as Trinidad and Tobago won its opening match of the 2023 Gold Cup.

Shaw was called up to the national stage for the first time last week and has already made his debut, coming on in the 59th minute of Trinidad and Tobago’s victory over St. Kitts and Nevis on Sunday. With the score delicately poised at 1-0, Shaw was a catalyst for assuring the three points went their way with the Soca Warriors scoring six minutes later to all but confirm the three points.

“It felt great to step onto the pitch for the first time for Trinidad,” said the Pickering native, who qualifies to play for the Soca Warriors through his mother. “It was a very important three points. We have two tough matches up next so it sets us up well and creates great morals within the group. It felt good to be a part of our first Gold Cup win since 2015.”

A fantastic evening for Shaw was almost capped off with a storybook ending as the striker rose highest in the penalty area, planting his header beyond the diving goalkeeper. The goal, however, was called back as the referee deemed there to have an infringement in the build-up.

Atlético Ottawa defender Luke Shaw, on loan from MLS side Toronto FC, also secured his first cap when he came on later in the game. Both players spoke on Trinidad and Tobago’s media channels about their time with the group so far, watch the video below.
