Atlético Ottawa defender Jonathan Grant placed on inactive roster list following pre-season injury

In a setback to Atlético Ottawa’s preparations for the upcoming Canadian Premier League (CPL) season, the club has announced that defender Jonathan Grant will be placed on the inactive roster due to a knee injury sustained during pre-season training.

The 30-year-old Guyana international, who recently signed a two-year deal with Atlético, suffered the injury while training in Ottawa. Following further medical assessments, it has been confirmed that Grant will be sidelined for the entirety of the 2024 CPL season.

“It’s truly unfortunate to see Jonny sidelined with this injury during our pre-season preparations,” said CEO Fernando López “We brought him in because he’s a quality defender and was going to be an integral part of our team, especially thanks to his CPL and international experience.

“We wish him a quick recovery and hope to see him back on the pitch soon. This setback means we must now act to fill the open roster spot with the cap space made available. We are already working on solutions for this season to ensure our squad remains competitive and ready for the challenges ahead.”

Grant, acknowledging the challenge ahead, stated, “There’s no question that this will be the biggest test in my career.” Despite the setback, he remains determined to overcome the adversity: “It’s unfortunate because you always want to tackle and surmount difficult challenges on the pitch, but now my focus will go toward giving everything I have got to make sure I can get back to doing what I love.”

Grant’s placement on the inactive roster means he will not be eligible to feature for Atlético Ottawa in the 2024 CPL season, regardless of his recovery timeline. However, the club remains committed to supporting his rehabilitation efforts and will keep the player close as a crucial element of the quad off the field and in the locker room.
