Atlético Ottawa is proud to announce the signing of Canadian winger Kris Twardek, with the 26-year-old committing to a two-year contract with the option to extend until 2026. Twardek, of Kinburn, ON, returns to the nation’s capital in yet another massive off-season move by Atlético and one that demonstrates the club’s determination to sign local talent.
Twardek, a right-footed wide player, boasts an impressive career to date having emerged from the academy of English Championship side Millwall FC. His journey through the soccer ranks includes representing both the Czech Republic and Canada at various youth levels, culminating in a senior cap for the Canadian National Team in 2017 against El Salvador. Locally, Twardek’s soccer roots trace back to Ottawa South United, where his goal-scoring prowess and general play captured the attention of Premier League giants Everton FC.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the homecoming, Twardek stated, “I always wanted to come home and play in front of my Mum, Dad, siblings, and friends that I grew up with. It doesn’t get better than that really.” The 26-year-old added, “It feels amazing to be here. It’s a blessing, to be able to play in a beautiful stadium, with a passionate and growing fanbase.”
Twardek’s ties to the region run deep, having grown up just outside the city in Kinburn. His early soccer experiences in Ottawa, competing relentlessly with his brother as they grew up, laid the foundation for a strong connection to family, the sport and the local region. The Canadian winger expressed his eagerness to contribute to the evolving project of the Canadian Premier League, and specifically the growth of soccer in Ottawa.
With experience spanning the English soccer pyramid, Twardek’s recent stints with Bohemians FC in the League of Ireland Premier Division showcased his prowess on the right flank, amassing 71 appearances, four goals, and 11 assists. Fernando López, Atlético Ottawa’s CEO, expressed excitement over Twardek’s arrival, emphasizing the player’s blend of on-field prowess and strong ties to the local community.
López stated, “Kris embodies the essence of a powerful athlete, entering the league in his prime and poised to make a significant impact on the field. Off the field, Kris has a deep-rooted connection to the local community and has a strong family focus. We believe in players who not only excel on the pitch but also carry the spirit of our community in their hearts.”
More than a marquee signing, Kris Twardek’s return to Ottawa symbolizes a homecoming of local talent, a player who not only represents the club on the pitch but also carries the aspirations of the community off it. As Atlético Ottawa continues to build its legacy, Twardek’s multi-year commitment adds a crucial chapter to the unfolding narrative of soccer excellence in the Canadian capital.
