Atlético Ottawa Adds Midfielder Francisco Acuña

Ottawa, ON (March 30, 2020) – Atlético Ottawa adds Mexican footballer Francisco Acuña for the 2020 season.

The 32-year-old midfielder from Mexico came up through the youth ranks of Liga MX giants, Tigres UANL and went on to appear in top-flight games in his 12-year career. Overall, Acuña has made 220 professional appearances, scoring 18 goals and registering 13 assists.

“I’m honoured to present today Javier as an Atlético Ottawa player,” said club CEO Fernando Lopez. “Due to the kind of person he is both on and off the pitch, he will be a pivotal addition for our team. He is a very versatile player who can contribute a lot in different attacking positions close to the area, doing a lot of damage. We believe that the combination of his versatility and experience will be decisive for the team to achieving our objectives.”

“I am very excited to join Atlético Ottawa,” said Acuña. “The club has ambitious goals with very clear objectives with the support of a great institution like Atlético de Madrid. After my career in Mexico, joining a new league like the CPL with plans to grow the game in Canada will be a very important challenge in my career and I hope to give my best for the team and for all the fans.”

Acuña is the eleventh player to officially join Atlético Ottawa, joining previous signings Ben Fisk, Antoine Coupland, Malyk Hamilton, Ajay Khabra, Michel Djaozardy, Ricky Gomes, Kunle Dada-Luke, Brandon John, Vashon Neufville and Tevin Shaw.
