The Gatorade Team of the Week for the fifth week of Canadian Premier League action in 2023, brought to you by Kristian Jack and OneSoccer’s Oliver Platt.
Goalkeeper
Sean Melvin (Atlético Ottawa)
The only goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet this weekend during what was otherwise an absolute goal fest, Melvin wasn’t particularly busy on Saturday night during an outstanding Atleti defensive performance. But when he was called upon he was able to keep his concentration throughout 90 minutes.
Defenders
Jean-Aniel Assi (Atlético Ottawa)
Assi had his best performance of the season to date for Atlético Ottawa, picking up an assist and playing a key role in his side’s attack during an emphatic victory against Vancouver. He was active on both sides of the ball, winning possession 11 times, and making three tackles.
Amer Didić (Pacific FC)
Another week, another goal for Didić, who continues to be a weapon from set-piece opportunities this season for Pacific FC. He also completed 88.7 per cent of his team-leading 53 passes, helping the Tridents to dictate possession and tempo throughout Sunday’s match against York United.
Thomas Meilleur-Giguère (Pacific FC)
Didić’s centre-back partner, Meilleur-Giguère was also clean in possession, completing 91.1 per cent of his passes. He also made four clearances as the team who have conceded the fewest this season in CPL action had yet another solid defensive outing.
Matteo de Brienne (Valour FC)
The young fullback has become a key player in Valour FC’s attacking identity. His brilliant pass to Abdou Samaké showed his abilities when he is at his very best. He also had 88 touches, and 21 passes in the final third, including five crosses played.
Midfielders
Zach Verhoven (Atlético Ottawa)
In the 69th minute on Saturday, Verhoven helped Ottawa close out their big win over Vancouver in dominant fashion. The Ottawa midfielder had a goal and an assist off the bench mere minutes after coming into the match.
Sean Young (Pacific FC)
Young was the orchestrator of another brilliant Pacific FC performance on Sunday against York. He had two assists and created four chances for the Tridents making 21 passes in the final third.
Ollie Bassett (Atlético Ottawa)
It was Olliewood on the west coast this weekend, as after opening the scoring against Vancouver FC just eight minutes into the match, Bassett delivered the kind of performance that made him last year’s CPL Player of the Year. He also had an assist on Ottawa’s third goal, and created three chances.

Ali Musse (Cavalry FC)
Musse was magical again for Cavalry on Saturday afternoon, scoring the opening goal and consistently being the focal point of his side’s attack throughout the match. He created four additional chances, and had four completed dribbles from a stunning 11 attempted.
Forwards
Jordan Hamilton (Forge FC)
Hamilton was excellent again leading the line for Forge. It was a productive afternoon for the forward, as scored the club’s first goal on Saturday with a calm finish, and then set up Kyle Bekker for the second.
Adonijah Reid (Pacific FC)
Reid was magnificent in a number nine role for Pacific FC on Sunday. He was a key outlet in possession, holding up the ball in good areas and allowing his teammates to run off of him. His pinpoint cross found the head of Didić for the opening goal, and he was key in the buildup to Pacific’s stunning second goal.
