Atlético Ottawa club-record home winning came to an end on Saturday evening at TD Place as a frantic match with York United ended in a stalemate. Captain Carl Haworth scored a double and Diego Espejo scored his first-ever Canadian Premier League goal but it wasn’t enough for Atlético as the match ended 3-3.
KEY MOMENTS
- Atlético Ottawa was held in a hotly disputed draw 3-3 at home to York United.
- York took an early 2-0 lead as Brian Wright and Kevin dos Santos scored two minutes apart with almost identical goals.
- Captain Carl Haworth halved the deficit ten minutes later, taking full advantage of a loose pass in York’s half before gliding past a defender and slotting home.
- Haworth would equalize with a pin-point free-kick, placed into the top corner, in the 59th minute – his third goal of the season.
- The lead, however, would only last three minutes as York went in front again with a fluke own goal by goalkeeper Nathan Ingham.
- Spanish defender Diego Espejo scored his first-ever CPL goal to equalize with a bullet header after great work on the wing by Rubén del Campo to tie the match.
- Espejo played a crucial role for Ottawa at both ends of the field.
- The 20-year-old created one big chance (most of any Atlético player) and had more touches in the opposition box than any of his teammates as well as his equalizing goal.
- Defensively, Espejo had nine duels and won possession back five times with one interception and five clearances.
- Atlético Ottawa returns to TD Place action at the end of the month as defending-CPL playoff champions Forge FC visit the capital (KO 7 pm ET, live on OneSoccer).
